This article introduces the physical principles for three different types of commonly used fiber-optic sensors and discusses important parameters to be considered in selecting appropriate fiber-optic sensors for rapid heating applications. 72 73 74 75 76 77 78 79 80 81 82 83 84 85 86 87 88 89 90 91 92 93 94 95 96 97 98 99 100 101 102 103 104 105 106 107 INTRODUCTION

Photodiode-Based Detector Operates at 60 GHz

With the recent advancement of gigabit fiber communication and the photonic distribution of microwave signals, there is a growing need to characterize the high-speed optical signals found in such systems. This task is typically accomplished with a high-speed photodetector followed by an instrument such as a sampling oscilloscope, a radio frequency (RF) spectrum analyzer, or a vector network ana...

Improving heating uniformity of fresh fruit in radio frequency treatments for pest control

Non-uniform heating of fresh fruit caused by variations in radio frequency (RF) fields is a major obstacle in developing postharvest insect control treatments based on RF energy. A fruit mover was developed to evaluate possibilities to improve RF heating uniformity of large fruit, such as oranges and apples, in a 12 kW batch type RF system. This fruit mover provided a means to rotate and move f...

Fibre-optic network architectures for on-board digital avionics signal distribution

Continued progress in both civil and military radio-frequency (RF) digital avionics applications is overstressing the capabilities and reliability of existing RF communication networks based on coaxial cables on board modern aircrafts. Future avionics systems will require high-bandwidth on-board communication links that are lightweight, immune to electromagnetic interference, and highly reliabl...

Photo-Detectors Integrated with Resonant Tunneling Diodes

We report on photo-detectors consisting of an optical waveguide that incorporates a resonant tunneling diode (RTD). Operating at wavelengths around 1.55 μm in the optical communications C band we achieve maximum sensitivities of around 0.29 A/W which is dependent on the bias voltage. This is due to the nature of RTD nonlinear current-voltage characteristic that has a negative differential resis...
